History
Where it all began
In
1949, the Marist Brothers and students of St. Francis Xavier's College,
Franco Chinoise, St. Jeanne D' Arc of Shanghai, St. Louis of Tientsin,
the old boys of Peking, Hangkow, Shantung came to Hong Kong. The ex-students
still kept in close contact with their Alma Mater and their former
teachers, and were ready to give a helping hand to the Brothers.
Since the ex-students had frequent social gatherings
with the Brothers as their guests, they felt something more permanent
had to be organized. The urge was felt especially at times of many
old boys going abroad. Thus, steps were taken to form a universal
body of ex-students and this was achieved in 1960.
Coming into shape
At
a dinner party for Rev. Bro. Paul Ambrose, Assistant General of the
Marist Brothers at that time, a resolution was tabled to affiliate
all the ex-students of the Marist Brothers with the World Union of
Marist Ex-students. After a long discussion, it was agreed to elect
two coordinators. Rev. Bro. Gilbert and Rev. Bro. Claudius were elected.
Mr. Gerald Abbass was elected as First President of the World Union
of Marist Ex-students, Hong Kong Division.
The
Union was affiliated with the Presidency of the Union Mundial de los
Exalumnos Maristas (World Union of Marist Ex-students), with its Headquarters
in Madrid, Spain. On 27th February, 1961, the Union received official
approbation by the Hong Kong Government with its own constitution.
Ever since after, the Alumni has adopted the universal badge of the
THREE VIOLETS.
Changes and Adaptation
As
the name of "World Union of Marist Ex-students" has been
changed to "World Marist Family", so World Union of Marist
Ex-students, Hong Kong Division has also been changed to St. Francis
Xavier's Alumni, Hong Kong Division of the World Marist Family with
effect from 22nd July, 1983. Since the majority of the alumni members
come from three sources, namely St. Francis Xavier's College, St.
Francis Xavier's School and St. Francis Xavier's College - Evening
School, the present name can give a more appropriate picture of the
Alumni.
While the name "St. Francis Xavier's" happens
to be the name of the three Marist Brothers schools in China and Hong
Kong, the Alumni also welcomes old boys from other Marist Brothers
schools of other countries to maintain and strengthen their tie with
the Brothers - to uphold the Alumni initiative: World Marist Family.
Our tie and our moments
The Alumni organises Annual General Meetings and social
gatherings like outings, picnics, barbecue parties, Annual Balls and
sports activities etc.. All these functions help to keep the members
in touch and to promote sociability and assistance among the members.
In addition, the Alumni contributes funds for the two SFX schools
in Hong Kong to promote extra-curricular activities for the present
students.
May the Heavenly Father and Mary, our Perpetual Resource,
always guide our alumni in all their undertakings and bless them all
with a bright future.
