World Cup Nite

The whole world will be all eyes at the finale of the quad-annual event on 30 June 2002, when the two final contestants of FIFA World Cup compete for the championship and the all-time fame. The Alumni is holding a carnival at SFXC, Kowloon where hundreds of old boys together will witness the birth of the new star in World Cup Hall of Fame and enjoy the fun and fever.

We will make use of the big screen with powerful projector in Champagnat Hall, SFXC, and audio effect will be supported by large speakers. Where else can we have a better place? Details of the day's programme will be as follows:

5.00 p.m. Soccer "Games" for all ages (with prizes);
6.00 p.m. Annual General Meeting;
6.30 p.m. Party Starts;
7.00 p.m. World Cup Final 2002

Due to the limited capacity of the hall that can accommodate no more than 400 people, the Executive Committee, after due consideration, finds it necessary to impose certain control on the attendance. Admission tickets, free of charge, will be available by mailing with a self-addressed and stamped envelope to us, on a first-come-first-served basis. Each old boy may be given a maximum of 5 tickets. Interested parties please complete the attached form and send it with the aforesaid envelope as soon as possible and in any case not later than May 30, 2002.

Soft drinks, beers and snacks will be provided during the match on a 'pay-as-you-wish' basis. Surplus, if any, will be contributed to the Alumni's accumulated funds.

With the aim to get ourselves more acquainted with the teachers and the younger generation of Alumni members, invitations have also been sent to all the teachers and the current F5 and F7 students of the two SFX schools, who, by that time, should have finished their public exams. We anticipate quite a huge number of the students will join the event and we are trying to arrange another big screen at the playground to accommodate them.

Because of the construction work of the new school wing and the sports activities that will take place in the playground on that day, car owners are requested to use public carparks in the vicinity. For your information, there is a public carpark right beside the school premises. The entrance is at the junction of Sycamore Street and Tai Kok Tsui Road. Car parking charge is $4 per half hour.

Do come and share the fun with your buddies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Alumni Web Site

The Alumni has registered a new Internet domain, xaverians.net, symbolizing the cyber presence of all Xaverians. Thanks to Joseph Leung (K00), we are now enjoying his company's free services of domain registration, web hosting and Internet connection. The new web site, http://xaverians.net, has already begun operating in March, 2002. The old web site, http://www.hkstar.com/~sfxaa, has ceased to operate. We have put a relocation notice on the page to inform every visitor of the change. Our account at hkstar.com will be removed very soon and thus all future correspondence to the Alumni should be directed to the new email address: sfxaa@xaverians.net.

With this new platform as the portal for all Alumni-related activities, we are determined to bring you more updated news, photos and other services. All photos we take during Alumni events will be found on the web site. For example, you may re-enjoy the moments of the Annual Gathering 2002 in the section "Past Events". As suggested by some old boys, we would also like to put on lists of ex-committee members to recognize their contributions towards the success of the Alumni in the past years, as well as to maintain a more complete repository of Alumni history.

If you are one of our ex-committee members, please send us your name, your term of service (e.g. 1991-1993), and also any names of your peer members that you can recall.

Should you have any comments and suggestions towards our web site, please do not hesitate and let us know: sfxaa@xaverians.net.

Report on Annual Gathering 2002

This year's Annual Gathering is the second time in a row that is held in the form of traditional Chinese cuisine. The event was held on 23 Feb, 2002 at Maxim's Palace Chinese Restaurant, Grand Century Place, Mong Kok.

Although the cost had already been lowered compared with a Western-style dinner we adopted some years ago, the response was not generally satisfactory due to very possibly this bleak climate of economy. We had 19 tables in the house this year, barely reaching two-thirds of our proposed target. Annual Gathering is the biggest annual event and bears a fine heritage of the Alumni. We pledge that we will try our best to keep the event running and at the same time control the cost so that more alumni can join it. We look forward to seeing you at the event next year, sing again our school songs, chat with old friends, and update yourselves with your alma mater.

Despite the response falling short of our expectation, the joy, the fun and the SFX spirit were all as usual. The love and care that old boys showed to our beloved Brothers and teachers remain the same, and cheers and warm greetings are still timeless. Should you want to join in the fun of the event, see the photos at this Internet address:
http://xaverians.net/AnnualDinner2002/

Our difficulties in organizing this event were also seen in soliciting prizes. We had amended our prize-giving proposals several times and at length table prizes had to be cancelled. However, amid times of hardship there always come great helping hands. We feel deeply grateful to the following old boys and friends of SFX for donating prizes for the lucky draw: Davy Choi, Philip Chu, Johnny Hung, Timson Kwok, Andrew Lam, Lam Kin, Ray Lau, Anthony Neoh, Francis Wong, Dragon Airlines, and Parent-Teacher Association of SFXC, Kowloon. Special thanks go to Timson Kwok who, being one of the eldest members of our family, handed the prize to us in person.

We had a prize-giving quiz session during the event. All the guests could participate by calling a mobile phone number, and the first one who successfully called in would be eligible to come up to the stage and testify their answer in mind. Of course, the mobile phone number would be different for each question so nobody could occupy the line in advance. The whole quiz was filled with fun and excited very good laughter.

All the quiz questions were related to both SFX schools in Hong Kong. They were not multiple choice questions as in "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" and absolute no tips would be given. You, therefore, must know something before you can answer them right. The ten questions asked in the quiz are reproduced below. Would you like to have a try? Test your SFX score!

1. What's the Chinese name of Bro. Vincent?
2. Who're the first principals of both SFX schools?
3. What're the full street addresses of both SFX schools?
4. What's the nationality of Bro. Konrad?
5. Who're the present principals of both SFX schools?
6. What're the "chang jie" (倉頡) Chinese input codes of the Chinese characters "聖芳濟"?
7. When're the two SFX schools established officially?
8. How many classes in total are now in both SFX schools?
9. What're the school mottos of both SFX schools?
10. How many years have Bro. James and Bro. Joseph been a Marist Brother by the end of this year?

Check with the answers at the end of this Newsletter.
